Magazine Advert

This is the magazine advert for our album. It includes the title of the album, the title of the band, reviews of the album, the album cover, images of the band members and where people can buy/listen to it. All these things are features that are typically found in music album magazine adverts includes those for ska albums.
This magazine advert continues the theme that we have used in out digipack. This is by using the same font, the same colour scheme (mostly just black and white) and having a similar structure and layout. This gives the audience a sense of familiarity through our products.
I created the advert on Adobe Photoshop. This piece of software allowed me do create what I planned and I am pleased with the outcome. I feel like I have stuck to my original plan and created a professional looking magazine advert that goes well with the rest of our products and is similar to other ska album magazine adverts.

Digipack

This is the full digipack for our album, this includes the front and back cover as well as the left and right inside covers. When designing and creating this, I aimed to have a continued monotone theme throughout each part. The black and white colour scheme along with the dancing man and the checkers makes the whole digipack fit in with the Ska genre. The front and back cover symbolise the key themes of the music (day and night), while the inside covers include images of the band and the record label logo. This aims to create a relationship between the listener and the band.

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions or real media products?

Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Made with Padlet

Question 3: What have you learnt from your target audience?

What I expected from our target audience...
When trying to target our audience I'd already thought of some expectations. I expected there to be some people whop had not heard of the ska genre because it is unusual and different. Also, I was expecting people who knew ska to have a good knowledge of it as they must be interested in genres which stand out. For example, I thought they'd know what to expect (costumes and the band's acting)and would be able to critic our music video with a good understanding of what we could have done to improve.

Target audience

Our target audience was mainly males between the ages of 18-25. These males may open to all music and enjoy listening to music which perhaps others aren't interested in. They enjoy having their own interests contrasting the most popular genre, pop. The target audience may listen to specifically songs in the ska genre, therefore listening to artists such as The Specials and Madness. Other genres they may enjoy could be rock and reggae, which can be seen as coming from older music.

Research:

Vlog research

I used other vlogs to look at their music videos. It allowed us to see what they included in their video, such as cinematography, and then we could use some of their ideas to help improve our music video. Also, the criticism said about other music videos we could take on board to know that this shouldn't be included in the music video as it would not suit the video, therefore we should not repeat this.

Planning:

Wordle

We used a wordle of the lyrics of our chosen ska song. Once the wordle was created we could see the most common words and knew these would need to be focused on. The words which stood out were all based on a night out, such as beer and night. This helped us to know that the audience are likely to hear these words, as they are young and can relate. Therefore, are most likely to go out at night.

Audience Interviews

The audience interviews were used to find their opinions on the song. They were given 'Nite Klub' by The Specials to listen to on a phone and then asked what they would include in the music video. The main feedback given was that they enjoyed the song because they don't normally listen to this music and that they would suspect to see a man wearing a suit. This helped us before making our music video because it helped us know what the target audience was expecting and gave us some ideas.

These audience interviews were shown at the beginning of our pitch. We asked a male (our target audience) and a female to research if they would enjoy it as well.

The pitch feedback was useful and we took it on board for the duration of constructing the music video. It allowed us to know what our target audience was looking for and then we could create it in the way they would enjoy it. However, if we has received negative feedback about the song we would have reconsidered our song choice and maybe even our genre.

SurveyMonkey Results

In order to complete our media products we wanted to ask our target audience some questions which would help us make some choices. We did this using Survey Monkey which created a questionnaire with a series of questions we made ourselves. This was a quick and easy way for us to find out some answers. It is also not time consuming for the audience so they would be more willing to answer the ten questions for us.  For example one of our questions focused on mise-en-scene. It asked what they thought would be good for the artist to wear. Overall, they said a man in a suit. So we used these answers and used them in our music video. Survey Monkey gave us lots of different results. We got mixed results about what people thought of the ska genre and some people were aware of it and weren't.

Interim Evaluations

Twitter.
On twitter I posted pictures of the original locations we planned on shooting in. I asked people to comment their opinions on these and how well they would fit with our genre. All feedback given was positive, that the locations would suit the song and ska genre perfectly. Also, it all the comments said how they cant wait to see our music video.

Facebook.
To receive feedback on the costumes and make up we were going to use in the music video we asked for our target audiences feedback so we posted some photos on Facebook. The responses we received were mainly good and said that it will be effective. However, some people gave some examples they think would look good, such as the white shirts which in fact we used in the music video.

If we had not received this positive feedback then we would have worked on their other opinions. For example, if someone had said that they thought the costumes did not suit the ska genre or the song then we would have taken it into consideration and changed it to suit out target audiences liking.

Youtube

We made our own Youtube account so that we can upload and research other music videos. Every time we edited the music video we would upload it onto our Youtube page so that out subscribers would be able to see our process to the final version of our ska music video. We had a comment on our first rough cut of the music video. It proved to us that people were enjoying our first video and wanted to keep seeing how we were improving. A lot of other media students and people interested in the ska genre watched our clips on Youtube. This tells us that our audience was interested in our product and that they may have been using our video to help them in media.

Final Feedback
For our final feedback of our music video and ancillary products we interviewed people after they had watched our music video and looked at our magazine advert and CD Digipack. The majority of feedback we received was positive. For example, we were told that they liked the fact that we used the men in scruffy suits. They thought it made them seem as if they didn't care and showed that they were having fun by messing around with the instruments. However, we did receive some feedback which told us how we could have improved our final products. Some negative feedback that we received was that the ska genre wasn't very known so they found it hard to understand what is normally expected. This made us all think that maybe we should of gone for a more popular genre for people of the age 18-25, such as pop or R&B. If we were to recreate another music video we would have gone for one of these genres as more of the audiences would be able to relate to the music. On the other hand, we could have shown them other ska videos so they could compare ours to another, such as Madness 'One Step Beyond'.

How useful was audience feedback?

Altogether, the audience feedback we received was mainly positive about our products. We have gotten feedback which I would take on board if I was to make my products again. The positive feedback that we got was that it shows the ska genre well because it is different to other genre music videos. Some negative feedback was that the ska genre was not a lot of peoples favourite music, so perhaps if there was the opportunity to make a music video again I would have chosen a more well known genre.

Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?
