Analysis of digipack - ska

This is a ska digipack by 'The Delegators'.

Here we can see that the front cover consists of the main band member singing into a microphone. This shows the artist as hard working and cares about their music.

On the back cover we can see the lyrics are written in a white font above single pictures of the band in different body postures. This font is small and just written in normal ariel. It is not complicated but as it is white it stands out and they change some words to being bold.

The inside cover of the digipack is an image of the band messing around. This is showing their fans who brought the album that they are fun and love their job. It means the audience think they are genuine and are likely to go and see them live.

The white background of the cover behind the actual CD is contrasting with the black CD, therefore, making it stand out.

All of this digipack is in black and white shows the age of the band but also stands out from other digipacks which are normally colourful. This showing that the ska genre is different from other genres.

Analysis of Digipack - general

On all areas of the digipack it has a mixture of light colours compared with the front cover having a dark background behind the fairy. These are contrasting and showing the band as different.

The font is all in black and white and lists the bands songs. On the actual CD it has written the name of the CD on it, 'TODAY & TOMORROW". The colour is a orange which is used on other areas of the digipack.

This digipack shows a fairy on the front cover but in a blurred image. It has wings which shows that the fairy can rise when flying which links with the bands name 'Relentless Risers'.

Iconic Director Case Study

Spike Jonze is both a film and music video director. He is a respected member of the industry and has directed videos for major artists.

Praise You, Fatboy Slim. Jonze directed the video for Fatboy Slims video, praise you. The video seems to be filmed in bad quality deliberately. The video is based around a group of people dancing in what looks like a shopping center attempting to amuse/annoy members of the public.

Sabotage, Beastie Boys. In this video there is no correlation between the lyrics and the visuals. Jonze has directed the video to make it look like a 70’s American crime drama. I am uncertain of the meaning behind this, perhaps a contrast to the music.

Drop, The Pharcyde. This entire video is one entire tracking shot but to set it apart from similar videos Jonze has filmed to whole video in reverse, it is very created and extremely well done. It only becomes obvious when the rappers start moving in physically impossible ways.

Genre Characteristics

Below are two examples of music videos from our chosen music genre, which is of course ska. These videos have common traits. The performers are all male, if there is ever a female in a ska music video then they are usually being objectified. There is often a theme of narcotics and or alcohol consumption. The seaside also seems to be a popular setting for ska videos.

This is a screenshot from the specials music video, A Message To You Rudy. This video features all male performers. As you can see the band is dressed in genre typical clothing.

This is a screenshot Bad Manners music video, Walking In The Sunshine. As you can see it shows some of the characteristics i previously described. The performers are all male and they are at the seaside.
