Pinterest Board - Props List
This is a Pinterest board with a few ideas of what sort of props we may use during the video. We have tried to stick to the Ska theme and to the types of things which would have been used in and around the release of the song.
Many instruments will be used in the performance sections of the music video to represent the band 'The Specials' who sang the song we are using.
Hair / Make-up / costumes - collage made on Pixlr
I created this collage on Pixlr editing and photgraphy programme. It shows all of the different costumes, hair and make up styles that we may use during our Ska music video.
All of the outfits seen on the collage are black and/or white, this is a convention which we will be using in our music video and one that is often seen in the majority of other real Ska music videos. The close ups of the girls faces represents the type of make up we would use, dark lips and eyes with a natural face. This is due to it going with the outfits of the artists and possibly fitting in with the time that Ska was introduced. The hats are a common convention of Ska music videos and often fit with the band and performance.
Please feel free to let us know if you think there is anything we could add or change to make our music video more interesting.
Many thanks :)
Storyboards
In these two images are our storyboard for our music video.
By doing our storyboard we realised that much more frames were needed than we originally thought.
Some of our shots will be for two or three seconds, for example, the funfair rides.

Deconstruction of lyrics
The lyrics which have stood out represent a daily life of a young man during the day and night. It specifically brings out night time e.g. night, beer, club.
By deconstructing these lyrics I learnt that our main lyrics are all similar. They all link together to create a night out, such as spending and beer. However, there are also contrasting words in this deconstruction. For example, work and paid. Therefore, it is then easy to see that our music video should show this contrast.
Most ska videos shows the people out and about, mainly at a party or a bar, for example 'Smash Mouth, Why Can't We Be Friends'. They all seem to be upbeat and have the artists dancing in the music videos.
Overall, our chosen song 'Nite Klub' uses the theorist Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites.

Loaction Pictures
For the majority of our music video we are going to locate it in Brighton. We thought that Brighton Pier is a good location for our music video as we believed that it fits in with the ska genre. This is because the pier has been a popular destination for people since it opened in 1899 and is recognisable.
Also, on the pier we can use the slot machines and funfair rides. Both of these consist of flashing colours and they match with some of the concept of our chosen song, 'Nite Klub' by the Specials. The song is about being up late at night and wondering the streets.
We will be filming in the evening when it is dark.
Brighton Lanes are also going to be where we locate parts of the music video because it looks old fashioned, fitting in with our genre. Also, we decided that there will be other people out in the evenings, therefore we will have the perfect concept of people being out at night.
Another location is our school theatre. We have decided on using a plain white room to make the music video seem serial. We will place a table and have the 'band members' sitting around it drinking and playing cards.

Analysis of another A2 music video
This is an A2 music video. I though that this was an intriguing music video for various reasons. However, this is not in the same genre as a ska music video. Moreover, it will have different codes and conventions to what we will have in our music video.
Cinematography
- The camera on top of the piano was a good idea because we were able to see a reflection on the piano as well as it being a medium shot of the boy playing it.
- Tracking shot establishing what area the boys live in. The ska genre normally use these to show where the artist is, usually of them being out and about.
- Filming on their phone as if the boys are filming each other, creating a shaky look. Also, seen when the boys are in the back of the car - it makes the audience feel they are in the back with them
- However, they could of use a more various range of angles of the boys sitting on the tree. The same shot type becomes quite boring to watch after seeing it in the video a few times.
Editing
- Slow motion used when the boy is throwing the basketball, this perfectly allowing to cut slowly into the next scene.
- Quite a bit of the music video has been desaturated. This showing the emotion of the boy as he has lost his friend.
- Cross cutting to the boys in different locations singing the chorus at the same time, even though it is different parts. It allows us to see they are apart.
- The ending we see the boys walking together but one of them is being slowly faded out. Most ska music videos start with and end with it being faded out.
- However, the boys could have used more of a range of editing, for example they could have used a split screen.
Mise-en-scene
- The boys costume is very simple as it's something somebody would wear everyday. This allowing the boys to look normal. However, in the ska genre you either get the artists being dressed up in suits and dresses or you have them a bit scuffed up.
- There are there main locations; a piano room, the woods and at school. The piano room is only used for singing the chorus but the other two locations the audience view them messing around.
- They do use other actors to be in the music video, their friends. But it goes with the lyrics 'How can we not talk about family' implying that they treat friends like family. Ska genres normally have a lot of 'extras' in dancing or just being in the background.
- However, the boys did not seem to have thought about the lighting and set they are using. Some could argue thought that they didn't need lighting as it shows the boys like they are having a normal day.
From watching this video i have learnt that... For our music video we could use the slow motion effect and fast paced clips. This could go with the musics beat. When the song quickens and is upbeat we can make the clips go faster (perhaps in a time-lapse) but when the music slows down the clips can be made into slow motion.

Music Video - Wikipedia
Hi everyone, so with currently filming our music video for A2 Media I decided to research a bit into music videos. I found some interesting information on Wikipedia which I thought I would share with you all. Hope you find it as interesting as I did!! :)

Have a good day :)
- A music video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.
- Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.
- There are also cases where songs are used in tie in marketing campaigns that allow them to become more than just a song. Tie ins and merchandising could be used in toys or marketing campaigns for food and other products.
- The origins of music videos date back to musical short films that first appeared in the 1920s.
- Prior to the 1980s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip", "promotional video", "song video", "song clip" or "film clip".
- Since the creation and increased popularity of YouTube, mainstream artists now promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the site for their upcoming song and music video. YouTube has now been converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market themselves to their fans.
- Music videos use a wide range of styles of contemporary video making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film.
- Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation, music, and live action.
- Many music videos interpret images and scenes from the song's lyrics, while others take a more thematic approach.
- Music videos have also become a place where product placement is evident in almost every mainstream video. They are always present and it usually takes place because the artist is sponsoring a product or brand. An example of product placement is the Beats Pill being featured in numerous hip hop videos. The strong emphasis on product placement is something that has evolved because of the global scale music videos can reach because of websites such as YouTube.
