This is an A2 music video. I though that this was an intriguing music video for various reasons. However, this is not in the same genre as a ska music video. Moreover, it will have different codes and conventions to what we will have in our music video.
Cinematography
- The camera on top of the piano was a good idea because we were able to see a reflection on the piano as well as it being a medium shot of the boy playing it.
- Tracking shot establishing what area the boys live in. The ska genre normally use these to show where the artist is, usually of them being out and about.
- Filming on their phone as if the boys are filming each other, creating a shaky look. Also, seen when the boys are in the back of the car - it makes the audience feel they are in the back with them
- However, they could of use a more various range of angles of the boys sitting on the tree. The same shot type becomes quite boring to watch after seeing it in the video a few times.
Editing
- Slow motion used when the boy is throwing the basketball, this perfectly allowing to cut slowly into the next scene.
- Quite a bit of the music video has been desaturated. This showing the emotion of the boy as he has lost his friend.
- Cross cutting to the boys in different locations singing the chorus at the same time, even though it is different parts. It allows us to see they are apart.
- The ending we see the boys walking together but one of them is being slowly faded out. Most ska music videos start with and end with it being faded out.
- However, the boys could have used more of a range of editing, for example they could have used a split screen.
Mise-en-scene
- The boys costume is very simple as it's something somebody would wear everyday. This allowing the boys to look normal. However, in the ska genre you either get the artists being dressed up in suits and dresses or you have them a bit scuffed up.
- There are there main locations; a piano room, the woods and at school. The piano room is only used for singing the chorus but the other two locations the audience view them messing around.
- They do use other actors to be in the music video, their friends. But it goes with the lyrics 'How can we not talk about family' implying that they treat friends like family. Ska genres normally have a lot of 'extras' in dancing or just being in the background.
- However, the boys did not seem to have thought about the lighting and set they are using. Some could argue thought that they didn't need lighting as it shows the boys like they are having a normal day.
From watching this video i have learnt that... For our music video we could use the slow motion effect and fast paced clips. This could go with the musics beat. When the song quickens and is upbeat we can make the clips go faster (perhaps in a time-lapse) but when the music slows down the clips can be made into slow motion.
